City of Los Angeles Animal Service Centers

Open: Tuesday - Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Closed: Sundays, Mondays, and Holidays

If you are looking to adopt a new cat or dog, we urge you to visit your local City of L.A. shelter! You will be saving a life-- and making our job easier!  But please know that it is very likely that your pet will be ill when you adopt it or soon afterwards; be patient and seek medical advice.

If you are looking to place a rescued pet, or a pet you can no longer keep for some reason, we urge you AGAINST taking it to an L.A. City shelter. This is not a solution. Please know that these shelters are doing the best they can, but they are hopelessly overcrowded and the vast majority-- about 90%-- of animals in these shelters are NOT ADOPTED and ARE EUTHANIZED...usually within days. Please contact a rescue group for help with fostering and placing an animal in need of a home.

Lost Pets

The very first thing you need to do when you loose your pet is GO DOWN TO THE SHELTERS! Calling the shelters is not going to work. They get so many animals each day, there is no way for them to know if your pet has come in or not. You must visit the shelters in your area every day because often animals are put down right away.

Call all your local rescue groups and put the word out. Many of them are interconnected and are very good resources for finding lost pets. Many of them also visit the shelters on a daily/weekly basis.

Put up posters in your area. Make sure the picture is good and the name of the pet, a good description, the location/date your pet was last seen and your phone number are listed. Also put flyers on parked cars, at veterinarian clinics and at pet stores in your area.

There are several sites on the internet which also help people find lost pets. Put in the key words +lost +found +pets.

Last but not least, although we may be getting to you a little late (sorry), consider micro-chipping your pet. All shelter and many vets will scan a pet as it comes in to see if it has an identifying micro-chip. This is the BEST way to insure the recovery of your pet. Many shelters offer very low fees for micro-chipping - around $25.00.

Giving Up Your Pets/Rescued Animal

Can you imagine how it must be for your pet to be thrown into a cage surrounded by barking or meowing animals, not knowing what is happening or where you are? Taking your pet to the shelter is almost always a death sentence for your animal. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES.

There are times when you must give up your pet, or you rescue a pet you can not keep, and many people do not realize there are alternatives to taking your pet to the shelter. Also, many people think they need to give up their pets due to behavioral problems. Please see a behavioral therapist or trainer before you give up on your pet. They are trained to deal with all types of problems and can often resolve it so you can keep your pet! Call your vet, local rescue group, shelter, pet store or look on the internet - you are bound to find someone who can help. Many animals have behavioral problems only because they were never trained otherwise or are not getting the attention they need. Do the right thing and try to work it out before you give your pet who loves you unconditionally.

If you absolutely must give up your pet, or you have rescued a stray which you can not keep, talk to your friends and family and co-workers to see if any of them can adopt your pet. If not, DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THE SHELTER OR ABANDON YOUR PET! Most of the shelters in the Los Angeles area only place 1 out of every 10 animals. Even if your pet is beautiful and well behaved, its chances are very slim for being adopted from a shelter. Shelters are overrun with animals and can only house them for very short periods of time, and then they must make room for new animals coming in. Most animals sit in the shelter for a few hours to a few days and then are put to sleep. Sometimes they are not even shown to the public for adoption. They are scared and very depressed - it is a horrible way to go. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES!

Call all of your local rescue groups and see if they can help. Often if you are willing to take care of your pet until it is adopted, they will help you place your pet via their adoption events and web sites. If you can not foster your pet until it's adopted, many friends or family are willing to do so, knowing that it's only temporary and they will not have to make a life long committment. See if they can foster while your local rescue group works to place the animal. Remember, you pet has given you hours, months and years of unconditional love - they don't deserve to die!

And last but not least, don't wait until the last minute. It can often take months to place an animal. If you think ahead, you can save your pet's life. When moving, remember, there are hundreds of pet friendly housing resources - there is no reason to give up a pet just because you are moving.
